What Actually Happens at a Boudoir Session

Most people say the hardest part was deciding to book. Everything that comes after tends to be easier than they expected. Nobody talks openly about what this actually involves, so here’s an honest look at the experience from the first phone call to the moment you walk out with your images.

Before the session

It starts with a phone call. That’s the free consultation you’ll find linked at the bottom of this page. It’s not a pitch. It’s a conversation about why you’re considering this, what you want to feel in the photos, and whether it feels like the right fit. No commitment comes out of that call.

Once you book, you get a prep guide with the practical things: what to bring, how to prepare your skin, what to eat that day, how much to sleep the night before. Not overwhelming. Just the things that actually affect how the photos turn out and how you feel during the session.

Before we shoot, we have an in-person conversation that covers everything in depth. What you’re hoping for. What you’re nervous about. What you want to emphasize or steer away from. If there’s something you’re self-conscious about, I need to know so I can work with it, not accidentally include it in a way that bothers you. That conversation is where we build the plan for the day.

The session

Most sessions take place at the studio in Zebulon, NC. The space is private, purpose-built for this work, and designed to make you comfortable from the moment you walk in. If a different setting makes more sense for you, that’s worth talking about. Some clients prefer a luxury hotel, their own home, or somewhere that holds personal meaning. Those sessions are possible. We’d work through the logistics during your consult.

When you arrive, we don’t jump straight in. We spend the first few minutes just settling in, going over what you brought, confirming the plan. That opening feels unhurried because it is. It’s part of the work.

From there, I direct every pose. You don’t have to think about what to do with your hands or how to hold your body. That’s my job. Most people say that after the first few frames, they forget they were nervous. Sessions typically run two to three hours depending on how many looks you want to move through. I show you images on the back of the camera as we go so you can see what we’re making and feel good about it in real time.

That moment when someone sees themselves on the back of the camera and actually likes what they see is one of my favorite things about this work. It catches people off guard. It shouldn’t, but it does.

After

A few days after your session, we schedule your ordering appointment. This is when you see your images for the first time, at full size, with no rush. Having a little time between the session and the reveal tends to change how you see them. A lot of clients cry. That’s not unusual. It’s often the first time they’ve seen themselves the way the people who love them do.

Nothing is decided until you’ve seen everything. Nothing leaves that appointment unless you love it. From there, we talk through how you want to take the work home: prints, albums, wall art. Whatever fits how you want to keep it.

Nothing is shared anywhere without your permission. That’s not a policy buried in fine print. It’s something we talk about at the beginning of every session.
